Papadom remake & sequel

23 Nov – Malaysia filmmaker Afdlin Shauki revealed two big plans for his 2009 award winning film "Papadom" – a remake in Tamil and a sequel. Garnering RM3.5 million at the box office, father-daughter drama "Papadom" will be remade entirely for Tamil audiences with a new line-up of Indian actors.

"At the moment, I'm doing 'Papadom' in Tamil. Astro TV has approached me to do this even before it was publicly released because they liked the story so much. The cast will be a mixture of actors from India and Malaysia and will most likely begin production in January or February next year. I will have a translator beside me, but then again we're also casting local actors who can speak Malay as well. Currently, the script is being translated into Tamil and to me, this is exciting! As a filmmaker, I don't want to do the same thing," said Afdlin Shauki during the premiere of "My Spy" held at GSC Mid Valley on 20 November 2009. He further added, "Not many people know this but the Tamil market here is bigger than the Malay market. Their collection is usually about RM8 million or RM10 million, but we're still at RM3 million to RM4 million."

When prompt about a sequel, Afdlin said, "We have to wait until Tamil 'Papadom' is done as we don't want to push too much on the sequel. But there is a story – Saadom's daughter Mia has started working and will get married soon. So instead of Saadom spying on his daughter, he spies on her fiancé!"
