"Ken & Mary" premiere at JFF 2013

The Japanese Film Festival 2013 will run from 12 September to 6 October, 2013 at various GSC cinema locations nationwide.

11 Sep – Japanese and Malaysian co-produced film "Ken & Mary", launches the Japanese Film Festival (JFF) 2013 with its world premiere at GSC Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur.

Marking the festival's 10th anniversary and held at GSC International Screens across various GSC cinemas, the festival is set to screen nine Japanese movies starting this 12 September 2013 onwards.

The festival's main highlight, "Ken & Mary", is a romantic comedy shot entirely in Malaysia by director Fukasaku Kenta (the son of "Battle Royale" director Kinji Fukasaku) starring veteran Japanese actor Takenaka Naoto, Chinese actor Hu Bing, actress Kitano Kii and Malaysia's popular comedic actor, Zizan Razak.

"Ken & Mary" will only premiere in Japan on October 2013, but will start screening in Malaysia for moviegoers this week.


Japanese and Malaysian co-produced "Ken & Mary"; a Japanese romantic comedy shot entirely in Malaysia, is the festival's main highlight.

Apart from "Ken & Mary", the other movies highlighted for the festival are; the famous manga and anime series, "Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea", "Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror", romantic comedy "The Great Passage" and culinary comedy, "The Chef of South Polar".

The festival was officiated by Ms Koh Mei Lee (GSC, Chief Executive Officer) and H.E. Mr Shigeru Nakamura (Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia) with hosts Mr Shoichi Toyoda (Director of Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur) and Ms Kyoko Kugai (Senior Program Officer of Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur).

Joining them were honoured guests, H.E. Mr Liudmila Vorobyeva (Ambassador of Russia to Malaysia), H.E. Mr Mario Sammartino (Ambassador of Italy to Malaysia), H.E. Mr Ong Keng Yong (High Commisioner of Singapore), Mr Hiroshi Matsuura (Minister of Japan), Mr. Koichi Wada (General Manager, Mitsubishi Corporation) and Mr. Shuichi Yoshida (General Manager, Mitsui & Co).

The Japanese Film Festival 2013 will commence on 12 September and will run for six days until 17 September at the GSC International Screens of GSC Pavilion KL, Mid Valley and 1 Utama.

From 19 to 22 September, the festival will then move to GSC Gurney Plaza, Penang and then for the very first time, it will make its way to East Malaysia at GSC CityOne Megamall, Kuching on 26 to 29 September and then finally to GSC Suria Sabah, Kota Kinabalu on 3 to 6 October 2013.

Tickets are priced at RM6 per movie and will be made available for purchase two days prior to the screening date.

"Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea" will be priced at GSC's prevailing ticket pricing for Digital 2D format.
