CGV introduces Christie RGB laser projection system

Date Posted: 29 December 2015

With its curved screen, CGV's SphereX will maximize immersive 3D experience for cinema-goers.

29 Dec – As we await the upcoming debut of South Korea's largest multiplex cinema chain, CGV cineplex in Malaysia, the giant South Korean exhibitor has added a new special feature to enhance its already amazing movie-watching experience – the Christie RGB laser projection system.

This makes CGV Cinemas the world's first cinema exhibitor to be equipped with the technology which will be installed at CGV Youngdeungpo's SphereX, a one-of-a-kind curved silver screen that gives movie-goers a panoramic 270-degree view to maximise the immersive 3D experience.

This will be the second CGV in Korea to install Christie's cinematic projection technology, after the installation of Christie's 6P laser projection system at CGV Starium last October.

"Having experienced the impressive brightness and performance of Christie's 6P laser projection system in CGV Starium, we would like to implement this top-of-the-range laser projection system in our SphereX auditoriums which are equipped with curved silver screens," said Nochan Park, CGV's Senior Manager of Cinema Technology Team in a statement.

"After much deliberation, we have decided to deploy a Christie CP42LH laser projection system at SphereX CGV Youngdeungpo. It has been optimized with additional laser modules to diversify wavelengths, with the objective of minimizing speckling for this technically challenging, custom silver screen when viewed with passive 3D glasses. This is by far the best solution possible for silver screens and we're very pleased with the results."

It is possible that the technology would also be applied for Malaysia's up-and-coming CGV cineplex which is expected to open at Empire City Damansara sometime in 2016.

Cinema-goers can also expect to experience a motion seat viewing experience at the CGV 4DX, a large screen format theatre at CGV Starium and a luxury theatre which will offer a lounge and dining area called the Private Cinema – all at the new and upcoming first CGV cineplex in Malaysia.
