"Jurassic World" still roams the charts

Writer: Florey DM

"Jurassic World" takes top three in the U.S., M'sia and S'pore.

30 Jun – "Jurassic World" makes no plan to go extinct soon as it enjoyed its number one position for the third week in a row at the U.S. weekend box office for 25 to 28 June.

Last weekend, the dinosaur sequel has raked up another USD54.5 million; adding that to its current domestic gross in the U.S, the movie now has crossed the USD500 million mark domestically – the fastest movie to do so with its 17 days record breaking the 23 days record of 2012's "Marvel's The Avengers".

Still placing second on the chart is animated movie "Inside Out", which has made its mark as Pixar's second-highest opening for any of its movie and the best performer out of any original movie. It took in another USD52.3 million last weekend.

Newcomer "Ted 2" opened at number three. Despite its high hopes, the Seth MacFarlane-directed comedy only managed to gross USD33.5 million, below the expected USD50 million. The number might not seem too shabby but it is a let-down when compared to its 2012 predecessor "Ted", which debuted at number one three years ago, making USD54.4 million on its opening weekend.

M'sia and S'pore are still tickled yellow by the "Minions".

In Malaysia, moviegoers are still seeing shades of yellow as "Minions" made no move from number one. Chris Pratt's "Jurassic World" came trailing behind at number two. Hong Kong movie, "SPL2", starring Thai martial arts actor Tony Jaa as well as Wu Jing, Simon Yam, Zhang Jin and Louis Koo, made its debut at number three.

Over in Singapore, new release "Terminator Genisys" conquered the chart on its opening weekend. Starring the likes of Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney and Lee Byung-hun, the fifth movie in the "Terminator" franchise also sees the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger as The Terminator. "Minions" still brings laughter at number two while "Jurassic World" roams wild at number three.

Also opening in Malaysia last weekend were "Ted 2", "Wolves", "Exorcism: Haunted Child", "Dark Places", "Kaaval", "Hold Me Tight", "Yagavarayinum Naa Kaakka", "Indru Netru Naalai" and "A Long Way Down".

Other new releases in Singapore are "Sardaar Ji", "Moone Moonu Varthai", "Indru Netru Naalai", "Kaaval", "Yagavarayinum Naa Kaakka", "American Heist", "The Black Death" and "Twenty".
