Brazilian "Nise" wins at Tokyo Film Fest

2 Nov - With the Tokyo International Film Festival finally closed, the Brazilian film "Nise - The Heart of Madness" took home the top prize, the Tokyo Grand Prix.

The film by Roberto Berliner starring Gloria Pires had out staged 16 other competing films from around the world as it managed to impress the competition jury headed by "X-Men" filmmaker Bryan Singer.

The film first premiered at the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival and then held its international premiere in Tokyo during the 10 day long film festival.

"Nise - The Heart of Madness" is about the true story of female psychiatrist, Nise da Silveira who was instrumental in changing the way mentally ill patients were treated in Rio de Janeiro.

The Best Actress award went to Gloria Pires for her portrayal of Nise da Silveira.

Best Actor awards went to "Land of Mine" stars Roland Moller and Louis Hoffman.

Other prize awarded by the jury panel was the special jury prize for filmmaker Kheiron's "All Three of Us".

The Samurai Award was also held this year for the second time and filmmakers Yamada Yoji and John Woo were honoured.
