It has been confirmed by Walt Disney Pictures that it has once again requested the services of director Jon Favreau to helm yet another reimagining of its animated classics – this time for the well-loved 1994 lion-themed movie.

The Academy Award-winning musical movie is one of the biggest animated movies of all time with a lifetime global box office gross of USD968.8 million.

It tells the tale of a lion named Simba, who fights to take back his homeland from his uncle, Scar, with the help of his friends, a meerkat named Timon and a warthog called Pumbaa.

The original movie featured an ensemble voice cast that includes Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, Rowan Atkinson, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Whoopi Goldberg, Jim Cummings and more.

Further details on the new "The Lion King" have yet to be revealed.

This will be Favreau's second animated-to-live-action take on a Disney movie, the first being this year's "The Jungle Book", which made USD958.8 million worldwide. The director is also currently developing the sequel for the 2016 movie.
