"Ola Bola" to face a lawsuit from former national players

Writer: Ashraf Nasser

Some of the ex-national players were not satisfied when they found out some facts were changed.

25 Feb – Despite the great success achieved by the Malaysian film "Ola Bola", now the filmmakers might face legal action from the former national team players who claim that the film directed by Chiu Keng Guan had changed the facts.

"How can the facts of history be changed so simply. For example, the character Ali is supposedly me and in the film, I score the winning goal."

"When in reality it wasn't me who scored the goal but James Wong, plus we won with a score of 2-1 and nothing else. They must respect history and be accountable for it," said Khalid Ali as quoted by Harian Metro.

Khalid adds that the decision to sue the producers of the film came about after discussing the matter with the rest of the former national players.

Bernama also reported one ex-national team player, Hassan Sani admitting to the claims that there are facts that were changed.

Among the facts that have been altered is the results of the match where Malaysia beat South Korea in the qualifiers of the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980 with a score of 2-1 and not 3-2 as shown in the movie "Ola Bola"

Meanwhile, actual goal scorer James Wong also said historical facts of the national football team should not be changed as it would confuse the younger generation. Released by Astro Shaw, the film which is inspired by true events, has sparked a phenomenon after successfully grossing more than RM12 million at the box office after 18 days at cinemas in Malaysia and Brunei.
