Han Solo movie officially gets new director!

Date Posted: 24 June 2017

The Han Solo "Star Wars" spinoff didn't take long to find a new helmer.

24 Jun – The Han Solo project is getting an Oscar touch from none other than Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard.

It was announced by Lucasfilm on StarWars.com that the 63-year-old actor and filmmaker will be the one helming the recently director-less "Star Wars" spinoff.

"At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago," president of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, said in a statement.

"With that in mind, we're thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film."

The project recently lost its original helmers, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, due to "creative differences".

Filming for the movie will resume this 10 July.

Starring Alden Ehrenreich as the titular character and Woody Harrelson as his mentor, the untitled Han Solo "Star Wars" spinoff is still slated for release in North American cinemas on 25 May 2018.

This won't be Howard's first directing stint for Lucasfilm as he has previously helmed "Willow", based on a story by George Lucas.

His other critically-acclaimed works include "Apollo 13", "A Beautiful Mind" (winner of four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director), "The Da Vinci Code", "Frost/Nixon", and "Rush".

Just as accomplished in front of the camera as he is behind one, viewers would recognise the TV icon for his roles on "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Happy Days". He also starred in George Lucas' "American Graffiti" and narrated and produced comedy series, "Arrested Development".
