Jared Leto to make feature directorial debut

Date Posted: 17 February 2017

Jared Leto is trying his hand at directing.

17 Feb – Academy Awards-winning actor Jared Leto is taking his talents behind the camera instead of being in front of one as usual for his next project.

Leto is making his feature directorial debut with Paramount's crime thriller "77", according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie will be set in politically charged 1974 Los Angeles, where two police officers uncover a dark and violent conspiracy while simultaneously investigating a fellow officer's brutal murder and trying to recover a kidnapped heiress, Patty Hearst.

The script is penned by David Matthews ("Narcos", "Boardwalk Empire") based on American crime fiction author James Ellroy's original screenplay.

"77" may be Leto's first time at helming a feature film but the title director has always been on the singer-actor's resume.

The 45-year-old Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman previously directed the 2012 documentary feature "Artifact" as well as the documentary series "Great Wide Open", "Into the Wild" and "Beyond the Horizon". He's even won awards for his music video and commercial works under the pseudonym Bartholomew Cubbins.

As an actor, Leto was last seen portraying the Joker in last year's "Suicide Squad", though this role might just win him his first Golden Raspberry Awards for Worst Supporting Actor. The role was his first big screen appearance since 2013's "Dallas Buyers Club", for which he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Leto will be seen next in two more movies this year, "The Outsider" and "Blade Runner 2049".
