Spider-Man's nemesis, Venom, to get a movie in 2018

Date Posted: 17 March 2017

Venom is getting his own solo vehicle in 2018.

17 Mar – Talks of Spider-Man nemesis Venom getting his own movie have long been circling around and now fans know for certain when they will meet the villain on the big screen.

The sentient alien has been confirmed to receive its own standalone movie, according to Variety, which is set to be released next year.

This will not be Venom's first outing on the silver screen as the villain previously appeared in 2007's "Spider-Man 3" and 2014's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2".

Spidey fans may not be seeing an epic battle between the web-slinger and the Symbiote again, however, as Sony Pictures is planning for the movie to develop into its own franchise, free from the involvement of Venom's first human host himself.

The upcoming Venom standalone movie is slated for release in North America on 5 October 2018.

To secure the 2018 release date for Venom's solo debut, the studio has moved the newly announced "The Girl in the Spider's Web", a reboot by "Don't Breathe" director Fede Alvarez, to 19 October instead. Its vacant slot is now occupied by the Venom-starrer.

Sony made the change after seeing the slot would be free of big competitors since Warner Bros.' "Aquaman" has also been moved from the same slot to 21 December 2018, the spot previously reserved by WB for James Cameron's first out of four "Avatar" sequels.

No director or actor has been named for the Venom project as of now.

Sony is currently focusing on releasing "Spider-Man: Homecoming" this July, which stars Tom Holland and will centre on teenage Spidey's struggle to balance his high school life and his superhero life.
