18 Dec – Margot Robbie may be reprising the same role she played in "Suicide Squad" but the actress has made it clear that her Harley Quinn spinoff will have "little to do" with the 2016 movie.

"It's very much like the comic books where you pick up in a totally different place, and it doesn't directly link to what happened before," Robbie told Total Film Magazine about her spinoff, "Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn".

"But at the same time, it's not such a leap that you're like, 'Oh, what's going on?!"

Director Cathy Yan also reiterated the fact that it's a standalone rather than a sequel to David Ayer's movie, saying, "It was really fun to create our own movie, and to not feel like it had to be a sequel or a continuation of "Suicide Squad"."

Aside from starring Robbie as Harley Quinn, "Birds of Prey" also features Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Helena Bertinelli a.k.a. Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Dinah Laurel Lance a.k.a. Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain and Ewan McGregor as Roman Sionis a.k.a. Black Mask.

The movie, which follows Robbie's titular character teaming up with Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya to protect a young girl named Cassandra from a crime lord, Black Mask, is slated to open in cinemas in February 2020.

While there are two movies related to Suicide Squad releasing in the next two years, "Birds of Prey" in 2020 and the James Gunn-helmed "The Suicide Squad" in 2021, neither will have a direct connection with the 2016 version that wasn't very favourably-reviewed.

Gunn's movie is touted as a standalone sequel as it will feature only some returning cast and as Robbie said when asked about it, "Tonally, David Ayer's world looks different to [Birds'] world, which will look different to James's world. So, no, there's not a direct connection. But like the comics, it doesn't cancel out one or the other."
