Two weeks ago, my cousin from the States dropped me an e-mail and said, "Dude, you have got to watch 'Coach Carter', man. It's a great movie!!". Of course, I already knew this movie was going to be the movie of the year even before he told me that. What I didn't know was that the movie was more than great - it was superb!

"Coach Carter" is, well, about the game of basketball. Inspired by a true-life story, the movie is an inspirational account of a controversial high school basketball coach, Coach Ken Carter, who received both high praise and staunch criticism when he made headlines in 1999 for benching his entire undefeated basketball team for poor academic performance.

Samuel L. Jackson plays the strict Ken Carter, a basketball coach who demands perfection from his players both on and off the court. To him, education is the most important. So, the players who want to play for him must sign a contract stating that they'll do their best academically or be thrown out from the team. When his players failed to keep their promises, he locked the gym and cancelled the games leading up to the championship. Yet though he may look scary on the court, deep inside, he is actually a very caring man.

Samuel L. Jackson carried the role very well. The sight of him shouting at his players really freaked me out. When you look into his eyes, you can actually see the fire and the desire. He even shed tears in the movie. I really, really liked the way Samuel L. Jackson played the character. Good job, Sam.

You might have never heard of Rob Brown, Robert Richard, Rick Gonzalez, Antwon Tanner and Nana Gbewonyo, and frankly, neither have I, but they make up the star players in coach Carter's team in the movie. Robert Richard plays Damien Carter, coach Ken Carter's son. Rob Brown plays Kenyon Stone, the hard man on the court. Nana Gbewonyo plays Junior Battle, the rising star of the team and Rick Gonzalez plays Timo Cruz, the most rebellious player with serious issues. Basically, they hate each other's guts in the beginning. Soon, under coach Carter's wings, they began to respect and trust each other, finally learning that in the sport, teamwork is the most important, not one-man shows.

This movie teaches you the meaning of teamwork and respect. Throughout the whole movie, Coach Carter addresses his players as 'sir' and in return, they address him as 'sir' too. Coach Carter also teaches them the importance of teamwork and to trust each other.

I personally liked the dialogue in the movie written so well that they will make you stop and think. Some quotes are inspirational, especially the ones that came out of Coach Carter's mouth. I remember a scene in the movie when the team lost a game and Coach Carter said to them, "Champions always walk with their chins up".

The movie is all about life, actually. If you think that the movie is all about basketball and is only suitable for basketball fans, you are dead wrong. The movie is about the life of a teenager, the choices he has to make and the pain and struggles of growing up. Drugs, sex and the hip-hop culture, you'll find all these in the movie. The message of this movie is very, very clear - education is more important than everything else. Even if you can play ball like Michael Jordan in high school, what happens after high school? This movie will also make you treasure your life even more.

Besides that, the movie is touching and has a touch of humour here and there as well. Oh, and there is a little suspense at the end of the movie (like always, in sports movies). What made the movie even more incredible is that it was based on a true story. The only thing I didn't understand though, was how do the players manage to do 2,000 push-ups and 1, 000 'suicide' runs without killing themselves? Are they robots or something?

Overall, this is an absolutely great movie. If you are a basketball fanatic like me, you would definitely love this movie. Even if you are not, you should catch this movie as well. Who knows, you might fall in love with the game.
