FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL

FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL

Struggling musician Peter Bretter (Jason Segel) has spent six years idolising his girlfriend, television star Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell), but his world is rocked when she dumps him. To clear his head, Peter takes an impulsive trip to Oahu, where he is confronted by his worst nightmare: his ex and her tragically hip new British-rocker boyfriend Aldous (Russell Brand) are sharing his hotel. As he torments himself with the reality of Sarah's new life, he finds relief in a flirtation with Rachel (Mila Kunis), a beautiful resort employee whose laid-back approach tempts him to rejoin the world.

Forgetting Sarah what?? I almost forgot about the movie right after leaving the hall. The story is as plain as this review. Here's the brief description - a typical romantic comedy that deals with love and relationships, where the lady leaves her boyfriend for a new guy and later regrets her decision when she finds out that there is no chemistry between them. Meanwhile the broken-hearted ex-boyfriend gets fresh with a new girl and love soon blossoms. Ironically, the event takes place in the same place - the beautiful Oahu, Hawaii. Yep, that makes up almost 90 percent of the story.

Having watched the movie, I personally believe that this debutant director, Nicholas Stoller can actually progress in his future after this movie. His vision in presenting the story is ordinary and the first 45 minutes were acceptable enough to forgive. However, the experience of watching this self-claimed romantic comedy is really a 112-minutes long disaster movie, really. It's bland and incredibly corny.

Acting wise, none of the cast impresses me. It's the sort of "safe" acting that invites yawns. We have a clichéd British rocker named Aldous (played by infamous Russell Brand), customary hot babes (Kirsten Bell as television star Sarah Marshall and Mila Kunis as resort receptionist Rachel Jansen) plus a mediocre performance by the hero Peter Bretter (played by Jason Segel) who also penned the story. What a boring combo!

The music score is pleasant to hear and the scenery is soothing but with such explicit content (at least to our local censors), the movie suffers unreasonable cuts, spoiling the dialogue and action. Overall, it's just an average movie for young moviegoers. Perhaps you would like it if you just broke up and you are about to fall in love again. Love may still be in the air - but I've forgotten Sarah Marshall alright.
