WHEN IN ROME

WHEN IN ROME

An ambitious young New Yorker (Kristen Bell), disillusioned with romance, takes a whirlwind trip to Rome where she defiantly plucks magic coins from a "foolish" fountain of love, inexplicably igniting the passion of an odd group of suitors: a sausage magnate (Danny DeVito), a street magician (Jon Heder), an adoring painter (Will Arnett) and a self-admiring model (Dax Shepard). But when a charming reporter (Josh Duhamel) pursues her with equal zest, how will she know if his love is the real thing?

Beth, a hardworking career woman gets drunk during her sister's wedding and jumps into the famed Fountain of Love in Rome to steal coins. Upon returning to New York, she is suddenly "attacked" by several men who are suddenly smitten to her and tries to win her heart. At the same time, a charming reporter by the name of Nick (Josh Duhamel) makes his move to court her.

No doubt, the film is hilarious and nails the task of entertaining its viewers such as the scene involving Beth trying to break a vase during her sister's wedding, an old tradition that wishes newly married couple a long-lasting relationship. We can see the determination and earnestness that was in Beth even though she was being laughed at. Other than that, scriptwriters David Diamond and David Weissman might have felt that the antics of adoring painter Antonio (Will Arnett), street magician Lance (Jon Heder), self-admiring model Gale (Dax Shepard) and sausage magnate Al (Danny Devito) stalking Beth amusing, but is actually quite disturbing. Imagine being pursued by unknown men! There has to be something wrong somewhere. It has a story that encompasses a predictable plot bound to make audiences daydream about finding true love - an element truly overrated.

The collaboration between Bell and Duhamel comes off perfect as onscreen lovers. However, Bell's acting is almost similar with her character in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" (2008) - delivering nothing new to her viewers. Out of her bogus lovers, DeVito's performance stood out the most compared to the other pursuers especially where he admitted the real reason why he tossed his coin into the Fountain of Love.

"When In Rome" has its own unique attraction and will definitely satisfy the hearts of rom-com lovers. It might not be as enjoyable as other romantic films but there is no harm watching an average movie once in a while.
