Watch this if you liked: “The Last Samurai”, “Ninja Assassin”

Ninja and assassin-themed films have been constantly churned out throughout the years, and this year should mark the start of another ninja-assassin film craze, starting with Rain's "Ninja Assassin" and Michelle Yeoh's "Reign Of Assassins". "Kamui" is actually released last year in Japan, but fortunately it managed to make its way here for fans of the manga.

Based on the original multi-volume manga series created by Sanpei Shirato, "Kamui" tells the story of a young ninja's life. Having killed so many innocent people, he decides to leave the ruthless ninja ways, hoping to start his life as a normal person. Unfortunately, there is only one way to leave: death. Kamui, being a runaway ninja, is constantly being suspicious about the people around him. He befriends a happy-go-lucky fisherman and starts his life as a normal person. But yet, his ninja past comes back to haunt him, endangering his life as well as his newfound friends.

"Kamui" stays true to its manga-like scenes, with ninja-like fight stances and impressive landscapes. Director Yoichi Sai ("Quill") emphasizes on stylized shots, enticing audiences as to what will happen next in that scene alone. The plotline is equally simple, with a few twists in between, but at times it seems a bit redundant for several characters that only pop out once in a while, such as the Lord and his mistress. Unfortunately, the downside to this movie is that the CGI effects were below par; the fight scenes that were similar to "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" also lack in terms of good, clean CGI effects.

Matsuyama Kenichi, who is better known for his roles as 'L' in "Death Note", "Death Note: The Last Name" and "L: Change The World" is exceptionally outstanding as the lead role Kamui. Although he projects the very same cold, expressionless look as 'L', Matsuyama Kenichi shows that he is capable in fight scenes as well, with his war-face and ruthless growl, Kamui comes to life with his impressive portrayal. Notable actors such as Koyuki ("The Last Samurai"), Kaoru Kobayashi ("Quill") and Hideaki Ito ("Umizaru") were remarkable in their roles. Hong Kong star Ekin Cheng also makes an appearance as one of the ninjas who hunts down Kamui.

Overall, the movie could've been better if the CGI effects done were simpler, and less cluttered. Do give this a go if you love the manga and if gory scenes are your cup of tea. The reviewer also honestly thinks that the movie should be retitled as "Run, Kamui, Run" instead, after seeing all those running that Kamui did in the movie.
