Gnomeo And Juliet

The greatest love story ever told, starring... garden gnomes? In the upcoming "Gnomeo & Juliet," William Shakespeare`s revered tale gets a comical, off-the-wall makeover. Directed by Kelly Asbury ("Shrek 2") and showcasing both classic and original songs by Elton John, the film features the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt as Gnomeo and Juliet, who have as many obstacles to overcome as their quasi namesakes when they are caught up in a feud between neighbours. But with plastic pink flamingos and thrilling lawnmower races in the mix, can this young couple find lasting happiness?

"Gnomeo and Juliet" is just one of the latest retelling of William Shakespeare's classic love story between Romeo and Juliet but this time it involves garden gnomes that come to life when humans are not around. It wrings around the particular struggle between two factions of garden gnomes from different sides of the fence who are eternal rivals in every single aspect of their existence.

The writer feels that the animated movie is indeed very different than the classic and the language spoken is by all means no Shakesperean but in pure British accent. Why would not it be with the voice cast lineup that features renowned British actors and actresses such as James McAvoy (Gnomeo), Emily Blunt (Juliet), Sir Michael Caine (Lord Redbrick), Matt Lucas (Benny), Jason Statham (Tybalt) and Sir Patrick Stewart as William Shakespeare himself. Even rock legend Ozzy Osbourne lends his voice talent as Fawn, Tybalt's best friend. However, one Scottish actress (Ashley Jensen) still managed to provide humorous bits among the Queen's English speakers in the film as Nanette, Juliet's friend.

The animation is not done by Disney or Pixar but the animations are quite noteworthy. It is watchable and enjoyable for little children who are not yet familiar with Romeo and Juliet while the colourful motions can attract the young viewers to relate to the classical masterpiece as a children-safe alternative to the teen flick adaptation before this, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. Except that the gnomes are just innocent garden gnomes and not hormonally-driven teenage humans. This is a movie any parents will love to introduce to their young children as part of their literature lessons.

"Gnomeo and Juliet" definitely redefines the innocent love story between Romeo and Juliet in a graphically-driven adaptation, with lots and lots of colours to boost its attraction factor.
