"Rock Star" tells the story of Janardan Jakhar aka JJ (Ranbir Kapoor) who takes music very seriously but is unable to achieve anything in life. Believing by the words of his close friend that all famous musicians in real life go through a drastic breakdown before making it big in the music business, JJ goes in search for that one thing that will make his heart broken forever. For that, JJ tries to woo Heer Kaur (Nargis Fakhri), a Kashmiri girl who is getting her wedding arranged. As they gets closer, Ranbir realizes that he is actually falling love with Heer and that he is willing to let go everything he had out from his life.

The word standout definitely goes to Ranbir Kapoor who plays his role so naturally, so in depth and so powerful, that one might actually believe that he is a troubled rock star in real life. Kudos is also to be given to model-turned-actress, Nargis Fakhri, who gives a decent yet raw performance that matches up with Ranbir. The late, Shammi Kapoor also makes his appearance as a classical singer in this film, as a mark to the legendary actor's final and the only film with his grandchild, Ranbir Kapoor, before his passing last August 2011.

The first half of the film moves steadily, as the comedy elements and a silly Ranbir makes it loveable to watch, but the second half is a little draggy and packed with emotions flaring between the two leads. Director Imtiaz Ali tries to move the story very quickly in flashbacks, and also returns to present time too soon, causing confusion at times which makes it difficult to keep up with the story. Perhaps with the straightforward concept of narrating the story, the film pace would have been much better and easier to understand.

As always, A.R Rahman returns to Bollywood once again to pour his heart and soul into the music and background score of the film. The songs also provided Ranbir a suitable playback voice that matches Mohit Chauhan for songs such as "Jo Bhi Main Hoon" and "Saada Haaq". The effects of the film are reasonable, but the locations of Prague, Kashmir and Delhi where the film is also shot, is beautiful.

Overall, the film is quite fun and funny at times to watch. The film also proves as Ranbir Kapoor's most fine performance to date since his debut in "Saawariya" back in the year 2007. Although the young actor still has a long way to go in Bollywood, we still love the loveable Ranbir. Let's just hope he starts his usual goofy antics again soon.
