Watch this if you liked: “Ops Kossa Dappa” series

"Ops Kossa Dappa 3" feels like an overdrawn movie, not because of its quality but because the film has two stories combined into one. Just when you think that a conclusion is reached, the movie brings the cast into another predicament that strays away from its initial genre.

Agents Saamy (Sasi Kumar) and Sethu (Logan Nathan) from five years ago in the first two chapters of "Ops Kossa Dappa" reunite with Agent Suzie (Jasmine Michael) with additional new members to the 4SS team, which include Agent Suzan and Agent Spygirl.

The first half of the movie focuses on gangsterism while the second half delves more into the supernatural. The genre for both halves of the movie are so vastly different that it sorts of explains the movie's genres as comedy, horror and action.

Needless to say, both Sasi Kumar and Logan Nathan were built to fit their roles, performed with nicely-timed comedic chops throughout. Kudos especially to Sasi Kumar, whom we are pretty sure is able to helm serious roles as well judging by the heartbreaking scene that had agents Saamy and Sethu breaking into song in the second half of the film.

"Ops Kossa Dappa 3" may be a Tamil movie, but it does not forget its Malaysian roots, featuring cameos from well-known local personalities such as Amber Chia and Fasha Sandha. With locations such as Puchong and Tasik Chini, it also provides a nice local sentiment to the movie.

For fans of more prominent Indian stars, you may look forward to Kadhal Dhandapani's classic performance as yet again as a villain, but on Malaysian soil. He plays Nachiappan, an older and more experienced head of a gang whose unorthodox trade is run as a family business.

When the movie moves away from gangsters and into the woods of Tasik Chini, the tone of the movie changes into one that focus more on suspense. While the mystery is meant to keep viewers going, the length of the movie mess with the storyline as you start to get a little frustrated about the on-going drama.

The movie would have served better if it had chosen to do away with the interim scene between both halves of the stories which gives no purpose but to feature cameo appearances.

The production quality of the movie is actually not all that bad compared with many other local products that work on a low budget. The two original songs featured in the movie especially impresses. You don't really need to know the language to enjoy them. The effects, while they do not feature prominently until the near end of the movie, is nicely done as well, providing the eeriness that one expects from horror films.

As a comedy, it is not necessary to take it too seriously and to just kick back and enjoy the entertainment. However, if there is one thing that does not sit well with us, it's the slogan of the 4SS agents of "No feelings, no sentiments, just action", because the movie is anything but one that has no feelings and no sentiments.
