Watch this if you liked: "The Four" and "Let The Bullets Fly".

"The Four 2" is a sequel of "The Four", which was released in 2012. A Chinese-Hong Kong production, it is based on the novel 'The Four Constables' by Hong Kong based Malaysian Wen Ruian. The novel has previously been adapted to several television series, obviously proving popular enough for studio executives to commission two movies.

"The Four 2", directed by Gordon Chan and Janet Chun, is set during the time of the late Northern Song Dynasty. The Divine Constabulary is a group of martial art heroes who solve crimes that require their special abilities. However, one of them is accused by Department Six, the royal police force, of a string of murders.

Not having caught the first movie, it took the reviewer awhile to understand the story. The show was confusing, and referenced various events and characters that would only be known to people who watched the first movie or read the novel. However, the story got better at the end, and gives a nice twist to the 'who-done-it' scenario.

The special effects were terrible, overused and cringe-worthy. Chinese cinema has not caught up to Hollywood in terms of special effects, and especially when compared to recently released films ("Thor: The Dark World", "The Hunger Games" films) the difference is stark. It does not help that the at least 50% of the environment and movie rely on special effects. If the directors of the movie had used less computer generated imagery and more natural environments, it would have been a much better show. Some of the fight scenes were decent, but also nothing compared to the best of the genre.

"The Four 2" stars Deng Chao stars as Cold Blood, the hero of the film. Alongside him stars Liu Yi Fei as the crippled Heartless, and the veteran Anthony Wong as Zhuge Shenhou. The rest of the ensemble cast were a decent bunch, however, they are not able to save the film. Due to the large cast, characters are often not developed and fleshed out.

The Four 2 is an ambitious film. However, it is too ambitious for its own good. It goes big in everything, from the special effects, large ensemble cast and two directors. However, more is often not better. The special effects drag the entire movie down. Watch "The Four 2" only if you have watched the first movie or are a fan of the novel.
