First-time director Bharat Bala's "Mariyaan" is inspired by a true event which occurred few years back, where three oil workers have been kidnapped and held as hostages by Sudanese terrorists. The film deals with how love and willpower can help a person survive.

Mariyaan (Dhanush), a young fisherman who is a skillful diver. He is in love with Panimalar (Parvathi Menon) and to marry her, he goes to Sudan to find employment as a contract worker. After two years of working, he is about to return when he and his co-workers get kidnapped by a local terrorist group. How Mariyaan struggles to survive forms the rest of the film.

With the recent success of "Raanjhanaa" in Bollywood, Dhanush is back to starring in a film with his mother tongue as a man struggling for survival in the Sudan desert. Whether it is a romance scene, underwater stunts or the emotional scenes in the desert, he portrayed them all well. Parvathi Menon plays his love interest and she more mature since her "Poo" debut. Both of them get ample screen time and maintained a good chemistry. The emotional telephone conversation scene between them is touching. The rest of supporting cast were adequate.

Oscar award winner A. R. Rahman's music score is another big plus for the film with its touching motivational songs like "Neenje Ezhu" sang by Rahman himself, and "Sonapareeya" and "Kadal Raasa Naan" which brings out the peppy rhythm of his music. Marc Koninckx's cinematography gives colour to the film, such as the beautiful underwater scenes in the Indian Ocean and Sudan's dazzling desert grounds. On the flip side, the slow pace of the narration could have been given more attention.

To round up, "Mariyaan" is a film which explores a man's love and willpower to overcome against all odds to survive. Go watch it.
