A.L. Vijay and Vijay team up for the first time to deliver an entertaining film for Vijay's huge international fan base. But whether it meets their expectations or not is another question.

Vishwa (Vijay) grew up in Australia and owns a bottle water manufacturing supply and partly leads the dance group 'Tamil Pasanga'. Meera (Amala Paul) joins the dance group and soon they fall in love. When Vishwa proposes to Meera, her father insists on meeting Vishwa's father, Ramadurai (Sathyaraj), who is in Mumbai, India. This leads them to visit Mumbai and soon Vishwa learns his father's true identity: his is the Tamil people's leader in Mumbai and wanted by law enforcement. Soon Vishwa becomes entangled in a political conspiracy and how he overcomes this situation forms the rest of the story.

Vijay's role as a lively modern dancer in the first half and serious role as people's leader in the second half was properly carried out. Amala Paul does have a meaty role in first half, but goes into hiding in second half. Sathyaraj did his role full justice, although it was just for a short period in the film. Santhanam once again packs a punch with his one-liners and puts a smile on your face every time he appears.

G.V Prakash's background music sounds better than the item numbers, which felt average except for the "Tamil Pasanga" and "Vangana Vanakamagana". Nirav Shah's cinematography appropriately portrays different moods for every scene in the film. Director A.L.Vijay, who came up with decent movies like "Madrasapattinam" and "Deiva Thirumagal", tried to explore the political action drama theme in his latest film but he couldn't infuse soul into the movie. He just kept the entire script formulaic and borrows scenes from other well-known films like "Nayagan", "Devar Magan", "Sankham" (Telugu film) and "Sankar" (Hindi film). The transformation process of the common man into a leader is shown at a very leisurely pace, which is good but ends up adding more minutes to the film than necessary. Although the film doesn't give the same level of racy entertainment found in Vijay's blockbuster film "Thuppaki", it will somehow satisfy Vijay fans to certain extent. Overall, "Thalaivaa" is a different kind of Vijay film.
