In the long line of doomsday movies, the world has been prophesied to be destroyed by massive earthquakes, towering tsunamis, herculean hurricanes and zombie-creating viruses , but if you had even been asked to spend a little time to speak about a saviour by men dressed in white shirts and black ties while waiting for the bus, then you might have heard about the inevitable doom that runs the premise of "Left Behind".
Miraculously being allowed to be shown in our screens, despite its heavy-handed inclinations towards the Christian ideas of salvation (you know, in case some viewers would be 'confused'), it is perhaps a suiting punishment for anyone who spends their time watching any movie with Nicolas Cage's name on it instead of scheduling a bible study class in their diary or wear a watch with the well-known verse from the gospel of John.
"Left Behind" has a judgmental tone and it serves just as a vindication for its target audience to patronise the poor souls that are forsaken by the Divine plan, with pacing, performance, plot and profundity being the major sinners. Even with a setup of first class skeptics, conspiracy theorists, sinners and heathens on the same plane, "Left Behind" chooses to fully descend on preachy territory by arbitrarily deciding who should be saved while giving the only answer that the Divine plan works in mysterious ways. Mysterious indeed as to why Cage would sign on to this to just flick a few switches and potentially killing an angry mob of passengers by decompressing the cabin. The supporting cast could do even worse.
"Left Behind" clearly states where it needs to be in the title. As entertainment, it is barely engaging and as spiritual reinforcement, it is manipulative to the most shallow minded and harmful for any inter religious relationship.Look Out For:
When the only Muslim passenger on the plane takes something out of his carry-on.Trivia:
"Left Behind" is actually a reboot of a 2000 movie of the same name, which itself is based on the first book of a 12 novel series centered on the characters who are known as the Tribulation Saints, who brings down the Antichrist. Best Watched With:
