Coming Home

Inspired by Yan Geling`s "The Criminal Lu Yanshi", this romantic drama is set against the backdrop of China`s Cultural Revolution from the 1920s to the 1990s. Lu Yanshi and Feng Wanyu are a devoted couple forced to separate when Lu is arrested and sent to a labor camp as a political prisoner, just as his wife is injured in an accident. Released during the last day of the Cultural Revolution, he finally returns home only to find that his beloved wife has amnesia and remembers little of her past. Unable to recognise Lu, she still patiently waits her husband`s return. A stranger alone in the heart of his broken family, Yanshi determines to resurrect their past together and reawaken his wife`s memory.

The Good, the Bad and the Heartwarming:

• This film adaptation of the novel "The Criminal Lu Yanshi" does not disappoint even though screenwriter Zou Jingzhi chooses to focus only on the character's final stages of life in his script.

• Gong Li stars as Feng. Though she can be stiff at times, she has great chemistry onscreen with Chen Daoming (as Lu Yanshi) and Zhang Huiwen (as Dandan).

• Zhang Yimou displays his tiptop directing skills especially in the scenes of Lu's journey home and of Dandan betraying her own father.

Trivia:

• Gong Li stars in many films by Zhang Yimou as she was his muse, starting from his directorial debut "Red Sorghum".
