Watch this if you liked: “KL Gangster” franchise
The Good, the Bad and the Music Piracy: Debutant director Soffi Jikan tackles the audience with his first feature-length film based on two aspects that he is known for - his acting in gangster-themed films like "KL Gangster" and his rock star roles like in the "Rock" franchise - thus now the film, "Gangsterock: Kasi Sengat" is born.
Even though this is his first full-length feature film, Soffi Jikan who is also the main star of the film is no stranger to the role or the directorial job as he previously directed several local short films and telemovies. However, unlike his usual tougher demeanour in other gangster-like films, his is surprisingly meek and tame in this role, which is kind of refreshing!
The film places a line-up of talented cast who perfectly suit their respective roles and perform each of their parts wonderfully. The acting performance is undoubtedly convincing, intense, emotional and realistic - and of course - the film has a bit of comedy and humour seeing that the two main casts are Soffi Jikan who is famous for his spontaneous comical remarks in movies as well as renowned local comedian Saiful Apek.
Also, the film seems a bit different from other local movies as it is not as cliched or as predictable as you thought it would be. The plot twist of the film is smartly used and is quite a shocker - especially the ending! Most importantly, the film conveys a wonderful message where musicians fight against the 'devil' that intervenes with their career - piracy.
Nevertheless, the only downside of this film is probably the shoddy video and audio quality which seems to be in poor quality and some of the scenes might seem a bit confusing due to the sudden jump-cuts from one scene to the other.
But overall, as a first-time director, Soffi Jikan did pretty job well-done for his first feature film and we would look forward to his future works.
