The Danish Girl

Set in early 1920s, a Danish artist named Gerda Wegener asks her husband Einar Wegener to stand in for a female model and paints him as a female. When the painting gained popularity, Einar starts to develop an interest in female appearance and begins to change his physical appearance into a female and calls himself Lili Elbe. Lili then becomes the first ever recipient of male to female sex reassignment surgery, and this causes a massive change in Gerda and Lili`s marriage. Einar`s childhood friend, Hans Axgil, shows up and forms a complex love triangle with the couple.

The Good, the Bad and the Transgender Pioneer:

• A charming and passionate film with a deeply touching and conflicting drama.

• Eddie Redmayne may be amazing as Stephen Hawking in "The Theory of Everything", but as a cisgender man, he seems a bit stiff playing the role of a transgender.

• Nevertheless, he is beautiful and lovely as Lily Elbe, and the transformation is simple astounding.

• Alicia Vikander did an amazing job as Gerda Wegener, where her pain, concern and sensitivity were definitely felt by the audience.

• The on-screen chemistry between the two cast is flawless.

Trivia:

• Some of the female cast who were first considered for the role of Gerda Wegener, the wife of Lili Elbe / Einar Wegener, were Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman, Marion Cotillard and Rachel Weisz.
