Dahsyat banget! Being one of the highest grossing movies in Indonesia last year, the original "Kuntilanak" was begging for sequels, as fans thank their lucky stars the delicious, 'barely legal' Julie Estelle seems to have gotten out of her Playboy Indonesia scandal just fine.

So while the most populous Islamic nation in the world is still reeling from her underage suggestive pictures last year, the rest of us this side of the Straits Of Malacca only get to see more of her in Rizal Mantovani's second offering about the floating vampires. Is it any better than the first?

Mostly, yes. Considering regional horrors now seem to involve the movie experience as a whole due to the advent of couple-seating halls. This being the concern, you can hardly do better than "Kuntilanak 2" and its contemporaries; what with its scream-a-minute plotlines and basic costume FX of flying long-haired langsuirs and gallons of gratuitous blood smeared across the pan-Asian caramel skin of sexy starlets. In these terms, "Kuntilanak 2" is an absolute cinematic triumph!

No, no. Seriously now, "Kuntilanak 2" does have something to offer those who aren't on a date. For one, it is the most stylish and expensive-looking production that you could ask of an Indonesian horror. A rainy backdrop is chiefly employed in this sequel as a clever development from the windy backdrop in the first - and in that, to good effect. Further setting the eerie mood would be the token character development of the Mangkoedjiwo clan, mostly a bunch of parang-wielding datins who are seeking to trap our poor, confused Samantha (Estelle, who else) into performing kuntilanak-conjuring sessions for them forever so that they can get rid of their business rivals.

However, all things fun and nice must be paid in kind, and we can warn you now that the film doesn't stand on its own. You'll need to have watched the first to fully understand the second (especially the climax!) and the film has also annoyingly sneaked in a devious opening for a third; one that you cannot imagine missing if you feel cheated from this outing. Making it worse for those who aren't in the cinema hall to make out is that "Kuntilanak 2" suffers from the same problem as its predecessor when the subtitling goes missing a good 50% of the time due to problems on the Indonesian end of distribution. You'll have to get ready to tune those ears to some Indon twang diagnosis then.

What doesn't require your ears though is the performance of Julie Estelle and Evan Sanders, who can't convince an eight-year-old that they're really in love or that they're really being haunted. Still, who cares when it's this fun watching her summon the flying ghosts? The characters seem to have enjoyed the benefit of an engrossing subject matter, so much so that their acting becomes peripheral.

Now then, the last film critic at Cinema Online gave the prequel three stars and noted that "Kuntilanak" is something parallel to your usual J-horror fare. This one will do the same, if only because two more ringgit for each couple seat is worth it. Jangan takut dong!
