Some might deem "Make It Happen" as a dance version of "Coyote Ugly" (2000) - they could be true. The film begins with Lauryn preparing to leave for her audition at a dance school in Chicago, even though her brother Joel is reluctant to let her go. Through it, she has to overcome huge obstacles to achieve her dreams of becoming a dancer.
The plot of this movie is almost the same just like other dance flick. It is utterly predictable and straightforward. Some people might recognise the almost identical plot-line to "Coyote Ugly" starring Piper Perabo who wants to be a singer, finds herself working in a New York bar while in "Make It Happen", the aspiring dancer finds herself working in a Chicago bar. The director, Darren Grant probably attempts to make this movie seem decent and respectful to women by putting some cheering women in the crowd at the club.
All of the cast members played their roles convincingly. Probably a majority of people out there do not know that Mary Elizabeth Winstead ("Final Destination 3", "Grindhouse"), who plays the role of Lauryn Kirk, is actually a dancer in real life. She can play a tomboy but at the same time still looking sexy. With her years of dance experience, she really can follow the choreography and perform very well in this movie! Besides that, the audience will get to see sexy Pussycat Dolls dancer, Ashley Roberts who makes her acting debut here.
The dance routines are well choreographed by Traci Phillips and Dominic Carbone who also did the Spice Girls Reunion Tour. The moves are extremely sexy and full with energy. They did a great job! The movie soundtrack is very catchy as songs by Lady Gaga, Jamelia and Malaysian-born singer, Che'Nelle are fitted in well with the dance routines.
Although plot wise is similar to other dance flicks, "Make It Happen" is nonetheless an enjoyable film. So just forget all the cliches, sit back and enjoy the movie!Cinema Online, 23 April 2009 |
