Top 5 local musical films

Which one's your favourite?

Due to the lack of films under the musical genre in the local film scene, the term "local musical films" might sound odd to some moviegoers.

However, this does not mean such films do not exist or are not popular because we do hear of local musical films that were well-received by the audiences.

The latest film about to join the list is Osman Ali's "Sinaran", a Malaysia-Indonesia-Singapore collaboration that is set to open in cinemas this 26 November.

Featuring stars such as Lisa Surihani, Izara Aishah, Evan Sanders, Syarif and Nadiah M Din, the musical film also includes a special cameo appearance by the nation's jazz queen Datuk Sheila Majid.

Let's take a look at some of the local musical films that have previously graced the big screens.

Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical

After achieving success not only locally but also internationally, director Saw Teong Hin has even turned his film "Puteri Gunung Ledang" into a stage musical. It was performed at Istana Budaya under the name "Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical" as well as in Singapore in 2006. After two seasons, it returned for its third season at Istana Budaya in 2009, where it was met with a rousing reception. The film stars Tiara Jacquelina and Stephen Rahman-Hughes as Gusti Putri and Hang Tuah, respectively.

Hoore! Hoore!

Director Saw Teong Hin found another success with the 2012 musical film "Hoore! Hoore!", which tells the story of a high school student – a sharp contrast to his previous film, namely the epic musical mentioned above. This time around, the director worked with the likes of the late Harun Salim Bachik, Fauziah Nawi, Adibah Noor, Kilafairy, Datuk Aznil Hj Nawawi and singer Akim Ahmad. The movie is led by newcomer Farah Nazirah.

Magika

"Magika" is a fantasy-themed musical film directed by Edry Abdul Halim. It follows two siblings who find a fantasy land made up of various folklores, myths and renowned Malay legends. The highly-acclaimed film stars Danielle, Saiful Apek, Senario, Fimie Don, Mawi, Ziana Zain, M. Nasir and Ning Baizura.

Rock

While the aforementioned films touch on the subject of history, school life and fantasy, Mamat Khalid's "Rock" focuses on a completely different storyline, where a group of youngsters form the band Rock Bara to continue keeping the spirit of rock alive. The movie stars Hasnul Rahmat, Que Haidar, Khir Rahman, Nabila Huda and Siti Elizad. Following its success, Mamat Khalid returned with a sequel "Rock Oo" in 2013, which also performed well at the box office.

Leftwings

Much like the above film, "Leftwings" also revolves around rock music. Instead of setting it in the '70s and '80s, however, director Faisal Chal Ahmad changed his film's setting to modern time. The movie follows four young men who are avid fans of the rock group WINGS and decide to form the band "Leftwings", inspired by their burning hope to become the 'left wing' of WINGS. Starring newcomers Aweera, Zouladeq, Wan Zaimie and more, the film does not leave as big an impact as "Rock" but it still garners good reception from the audiences.
