15 Dec – All Tamil speaking cinemagoers, rejoice! Sci-fi blockbuster "The Day The Earth Stood Still" starring Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly will feature a Tamil-language version for the very first time in Malaysia. Beginning 18 December 2008, a Tamil version of the film will be playing at three selected locations - Big Cinemas Brem Mall, Kepong, Big Cinemas Bukit Jambul, Penang and Big Cinemas PJ State. All other cinema locations are currently screening the English-language version of the movie and have started doing so since its nationwide release on 11 December 2008. As announced by Mr. Chow Will Pin, Managing Director of Twentieth Century Fox Film Malaysia, this would be Fox's very first Hollywood blockbuster movie to be dubbed in Tamil language.
According to the source:
"We decided to show 'The Day The Earth Stood Still' in Tamil as an experiment to see audience response. The decision to show it only in Big Cinemas chains is because they are the exclusive Tamil version locations for Fox. At the moment we do not have enough manpower to have our very own Tamil version for all our movies. However, if things goes well with this one, we may have Tamil versions of other titles as well next year in 2009."
"The Day The Earth Stood Still" is a remake of the 1951 sci-fi thriller of the same name. Keanu Reeves portrays Klaatu, an alien whose appearance on Earth triggers a global upheaval. As governments and scientists race to unravel the mystery behind the visitor's arrival, a scientist and her young stepson get caught up in his mission and come to understand the ramifications of his being a self-described "friend to the Earth." 18 December 2008 will be "The Day The Earth Stood Still" in Tamil!
