"Avatar" sneak peek

Teaser poster for James Cameron's "Avatar"

13 Aug – Cinema Online is offering a chance for loyal readers to watch exclusive footage for the upcoming James Cameron movie "Avatar" in 3-D, courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox Malaysia.

Not to be confused with the Nickelodeon anime show "Avatar: The Last Airbender" (which has itself been renamed to omit 'Avatar' for the same reason), James Cameron's sci-fi is set two centuries in the future where an ex-marine is offered the chance to travel to a distant planet inhabited by a primitive alien race and help exploit the planet's resources.

Comprising cast members Sam Worthington ("Terminator Salvation"), Sigourney Weaver ("Alien"), Michelle Rodriguez ("Fast And Furious") and Giovanni Ribisi ("Public Enemies"), this big-budget production is described by the director in many interviews to be something like a "Matrix" waiting to be experienced by the cinema-going world. The movie also has one of the longest post-production periods in cinema history (almost two years) and the pre-production took more than ten years because James Cameron could not find financiers for the project, following "Titanic" in 1997, for what was very expensive CGI at the time.

The footage we will be showing on 22 August 2009, Saturday at 11.30am GSC Mid Valley Hall 4 will add up to total running time of just over 16 min and includes a short James Cameron intro in 3-D (run time: 39 seconds) and 3-D movie footage (run time: 15 minutes, 34 seconds), which in addition to a shorter edit of scenes from the Comicon footage concludes with an action montage culled from finished footage of the teaser trailer.

Those interested to catch a glimpse of this exclusive footage (you'll be among the first in the world to see it) can respond on Cinema Online's forum.

"Avatar" opens in Malaysia on 17 December 2009.
