Fire damage: GSC 1U closed

The fire appears to have started in Glitters cafe

26 Mar – Golden Screen Cinemas 1 Utama is currently closed off for repairs due to damage from smoke and fire-fighting efforts at Glitters Cafe around midnight on Thursday.

A Cinema Online member at the scene, Terence Tan reported that his viewing of "Lovely Bones" at 11.20pm was cut short by an hour, when the alarm went off. "It was around 15-20 minutes before staff came. Smoke filled the hall very fast and the staff eventually started evacuating everyone by calling 'Keluar! Keluar! Keluar!' The lights were also not switched on for the evacuation." Another Cinema Online member reported that many cinemagoers were quite lost after exiting past the half closed shutters as there was nobody around to guide the crowd through mall's evacuation routes. Only one fire engine was at the scene, sprinklers reportedly didn't go off in the halls.

An early visit by Cinema Online at the location this morning revealed that the fire likely started in Glitters Cafe, which caused smoke to spread throughout the floor and into the halls. Fire fighting efforts at the lobby were successful in containing the fire which didn't spread beyond Glitters Cafe. Water damage however rendered almost all electronics in the lobby and box office inoperable, including ticketing systems and overhead LCD screen displays.

Johan Abdul Aziz told Cinema Online: "I went to watch 'The Lovely Bones' this morning at GSC 1 Utama but when I arrived at 10.45am, the carpark entrance was closed and the shutters were down, so I thought I came too early. Then I found a security guard who was posted to inform patrons of the situation. Many people came to watch movies but GSC wasn't open so some of us went over to TGV instead since we're already here at the mall."

Meanwhile, GSC has offered a customer service e-mail address to handle all in-coming queries. Those who have purchased tickets for today's shows via GSC's website can email to custserv@gsc.com.my together with the movie title, transaction date, credit card number & GSC website Login ID in order to be refunded. However, advance tickets bought over the box office counter can only be refunded at GSC 1 Utama's Gold Class counter after 2pm today upon presentation of movie tickets.
In recent years, other cinemas that have also temporarily closed due damage from fire-fighting or smoke damage include TGV Sunway Pyramid and TGV KLCC. Similarly, the source of fire and smoke were from beyond the cinema itself.
