Little Fockers vs Gulliver

The cast of "Meet The Parents: Little Fockers" (From L): Ben Stiller, Jessica Alba, Robert DeNiro & Owen Wilson.

28 Dec – The recent Christmas weekend witnessed last week's chart topper "TRON: Legacy", bowing down to the pulling magic of "Little Fockers" in North America for the weekend just gone (23-26 Dec), followed closely by Oscar-winning Coen brothers' Western flick, "True Grit".

Three time's a charm however it appeared otherwise for the Ben Stiller comedy where the Fockers' family reunion only bagged an estimated USD$48.3 million within its five-day opening which by comparison, its predecessor "Meet The Fockers" made US$70.5 million on the same weekend in 2004 and it had better five-day attendance than "Little Fockers", reports Box Office Mojo.

On the other hand, the site also reported that "True Grit" posted the top-grossing opening weekend in North America ever for a straight-shooting Western, capturing a US$36.8 million tally in five days and has become the highest-grossing gun-toting flick since "3:10 to Yuma", which started much lower and earned US$53.6 million in total.

The Western drama starring "TRON Legacy"'s Jeff Bridges as a fearless, one-eyed U.S Marshal is set to play in Singapore and Malaysia on 24 February 2011.

Gulliver's Travel rules Malaysian movie-goers.

Meanwhile Jack Black's holiday flick, "Gulliver's Travels" opened Stateside on Christmas Day with only an estimated US$7.2 million in two days according to studio estimates.

On the contrary in Malaysia, official weekend box office numbers reported that the 3D adventure comedy, inspired by Jonathan Swift's classic tops the three highest-grossing movies followed by "TRON Legacy" and Tamil version of 1998's "There's Something About Mary" starring Kamal Haasan, "Manmadhan Ambu".

Successful local horror-comedy "Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah" continues on raking in RM6 million up until its second weekend at the box-office, according to local distributor Tayangan Unggul.

Among other films that debuted over the weekend include "Janin", "Vampire Warriors", "Tees Maar Khan" and "Toonpur Ka Superhero".

The 3D and live-action mix of Jellystone Park's loveable pic-a-nic basket-stealing bear, "Yogi Bear" debuted to a decent opening in Singapore, placing itself third right behind "Little Fockers" at number one and followed by techno-fantasy "TRON: Legacy", according to Cinematograph Film Exhibitors Association.
