A prosperous box office

Writer: Lai Swee Wei

17 Feb – Director Chris Columbus' fantasy flick "Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief" bolted to the top as it debuted against all other seasonal Chinese New Year films during the Lunar New Year/Valentine's Day weekend in Malaysia. However, the film opened in second behind the United States box office hit "Valentine's Day", which dwells on the romantic happenings of various couples on Valentine's Day.

Posted at US$56.3 million, "Valentine's Day" ranked as the second highest-grossing opening for a romantic comedy behind "Sex And The City" and doubling the debut of "He's Just Not That Into You", according to online tracker Box Office Mojo. With only 30 prints in Malaysia, movie distributor Warner Bros. said that this feel-good film did quite well despite screening only within the Klang Valley. GSC Mid Valley cinema manager, Mr Lee Kong Yew supported that notion stating it even had sold out showtimes at the cinema location.

Meanwhile, Eric Tsang's comedy "72 Tenants Of Prosperity" was a crowd pleaser amongst other Lunar New Year flicks in Malaysia until Jackie Chan's "Little Big Soldier" co-starring singer-turned-actor Wang Lee Hom opened in cinemas nationwide on Sunday. According Mr Lee, the fifth instalment to the "All's Well End's Well" franchise had an average response at Mid Valley, noting that last year's "All's Well End's Well 2009" did better than of this year.

Opened in time for the festive season, new Lotus Five Star cinema location in Ipoh had Tamil comedy "Goa" at the top of the box office, with "All's Well End's Well Too 2010" the top selling Chinese movie. With recent queries surrounding the release of Shahrukh Khan's "My Name Is Khan" at the location, the film has been confirmed to release on 19 February 2010.
