Filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul receiving the coveted prize while actress Charlotte Gainsbourg looks on

8 Dec – Palme d'Or winner Apichatpong Weerasethakul has confirmed that he will be in Singapore to promote his Cannes gem "Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives", according to Lighthouse Pictures Singapore.

The Thai drama recently won the coveted prize at the prestigious film festival, the first Asian film to do so since Japan in 1997 with "The Eel", which shared the golden palm with Iran's "Taste of Cherry." It also marks the first time a Thai director has scooped the award.

About the final days of a man dying from acute kidney failure, "Uncle Boonmee" chronicles the titular character's journey to a mysterious hilltop cave in the company of his long lost son and also the ghost of his deceased wife.

The film has been selected as Thailand's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the upcoming 83rd Academy Awards.

Rated PG in Singapore with a runtime of 107 minutes, the English-subtitled movie will open in Singaporean screens this 27 January 2010 while a Malaysian release is not known.
