29 Mar – DreamWorks Animation's latest movie "How To Train Your Dragon" soared to the top at the United States weekend box office, breathing fire over Tim Burton's "Alice In Wonderland" potential fourth week win. Meanwhile in Singapore, it outgrossed all movies for second week straight as the non-3D version released over the weekend. On the other hand, local film "Evolusi KL Drift 2" raced to the top in Malaysia. Featuring the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler and America Ferrera, the film garnered an estimated US$43.3 million in the US, but fell short of the previous DreamWorks Animation 3D feature, "Monsters Vs. Aliens" (US$59.3 million), according to Box Office Mojo. It also was the highest-grossing dragon movie debut ever, topping "Eragon"'s US$23.2 million.
On another note, due to last Thursday's fire incident at Glitters Café, GSC 1 Utama's box office collections had been affected as the cinema closed on Friday due to repairs caused by fire fighting efforts. Refunds were given to moviegoers who had pre-purchased their movie tickets for that Friday itself and the cinema began operating the next day. Meanwhile in relation to Earth Hour, various cinemas have participated in the global awareness by turning off their non-essential lights from 8.30pm to 9.30pm last Saturday. It was reported that Big Cinemas Taiping Sentral Mall, MBO Terminal 2, Cathay Cineplexes e@Curve, and GSC cinemas contributed in the event.
