21 Mar – "Limitless" redefines success as it takes the top spot in the North American box office, followed by Matthew McConaughey's legal drama "Lincoln Lawyer" and Seth Rogen's sci-fi comedy "Paul" for the weekend just gone (17-20 March), BoxOfficeMojo reported.
"Limitless" packed an estimated US$19 million and that trailed the opening weekends of recent thrillers "Unknown" (US$21.9 million) and "The Adjustment Bureau" (US$21.2 million) which proved to be quite remarkable for Bradley Cooper's first real star vehicle that tells about a writer who discovers a top-secret drug which bestows him with super human abilities.
"Limitless" is scheduled for a release in Malaysia on 14 April while in Singapore on 7 April.
The tracker site also reported that "The Lincoln Lawyer" drew an estimated US$13.4 million which was star Matthew McConaughey's top-grossing start in a non-comedy-or-action movie since his breakout in "A Time to Kill".
"The Lincoln Lawyer" opens in cinemas in Singapore on 24 March while a Malaysian release is tentatively scheduled on 7 April, which subjects to further confirmation.
Meanwhile GSC Mid Valley cinema manager Lee Kong Yew revealed that the top three highest-grossing movies at the prime location for the weekend are "World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles", Malaysian epic "Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa" and "World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles (2D)".
Fans and moviegoers also took up the opportunity to catch the exclusive screening of selected Hong Kong movies from a range of classic to modern blockbuster hits which include Tsui Hark's "Once Upon A Time In China", John Woo's "A Better Tomorrow", Wilson Yip's "Ip Man" during the Malaysian 3rd Hong Kong Film Festival that took place at GSC Midvalley, GSC Pavilion KL and GSC 1Utama over the weekend just gone.
Other new releases and sneak shows over the weekend in Malaysia include "Muthuku Muthaga", "Ratu The Movie", "Men Suddenly In Love" and "Gurushetram – 24 Hours Of Anger".
New releases and sneak shows in Singapore over the weekend include "World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles", "Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules", "Perfect Rivals", "The Way Back", "The Dilemma", "The Man From Nowhere" and "The Illusionist".
