"Top Gun 2" in the works

12 Dec – Academy Award-winning actor-producer, Tom Cruise, revealed in a recent interview with MTV that a sequel is in the works for the 1986 commercial hit, "Top Gun", according to MTV.

"We're working on it," said the 49-year-old, fresh off his latest movie, "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol".

Rumours about "Top Gun 2" have surfaced more than year ago about the return of Cruise, director Tony Scott and Jerry Bruckheimer for a potential "Top Gun" sequel. Scott confirmed that he would be directing the sequel, but Cruise's involvement remained a mystery until now.

"I said to Tony I want to make another movie with him. He and I haven't made a film since "Days of Thunder,"" said the actor.

Cruise added, "Tony and I and Jerry, we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas of where it is now."

Originally, Christopher McQuarrie, the writer of "The Usual Suspects", was rumoured to pen the script for "Top Gun 2", which will feature Maverick as the lead for the follow-up, but Cruise refuted this.

"I don't think Chris [McQuarrie] is going to write it," he said, adding, "Chris is directing "One Shot" right now, which I'm acting in. We've got to go back in January and finish it."

Cruise, who plays Maverick in the movie, will return to his role, but as an instructor for a new class of recruits.

"I hope we can figure this out to go do it again," he quipped.

"If we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot "Top Gun.""

Cruise will next be seen in "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol", which will be released in Malaysia's and Singapore's cinemas on 15 December this year.
