"Argo" finally breaks through

30 Oct – It is in a week of mediocre releases (25 – 28 November), that the Ben Affleck-directed film finally got the recognition it deserved, after having charted second and third places during the past two weeks since its debut. The American thriller film has already grossed a total of US$60.5 million, and it is the first movie since "True Grit" to claim the top spot for the first time on its third frame. In second place is Tom Tykwer and Wachowski siblings' "Cloud Atlas" with the highest debut among the weekend's newcomers that involves "Silent Hill: Revelation 3D", "Fun Size" and "Chasing Mavericks". The epic science fiction and drama film consists of six nested stories that is an exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution. Rounding up the top three is "Hotel Transylvania" which jumped from fourth place last weekend up to third place over the weekend.

As for Malaysia, "Argo" has yet to be seen, leaving newcomer "Silent Hill: Revelation" to take first place. The film is available in both 35mm and 3D film formats, hence why the 3D label in the title has been omitted. In second place is yet another newly debuted spine-tingling film that is "Paranormal Activity 4" although considering its negative reception, it is less of a terror to the senses as opposed to it being a terror for even existing. Meanwhile, last week's champion, which is also a horror film, "Sinister", eased into third place.

In Singapore, many chose to seek out "Paranormal Activity 4" in the weekend gone by, aiding it into the top spot. "Taichi Hero", the sequel to the Chinese steampunk and martial arts blockbuster "Taichi 0", opened in second place. The film picks up where "Tai Chi O" left off, with Master Chen (Tony Leung Ka-fai)'s eldest son, Zai Yang (Feng Shaofeng)'s sudden return to Chen village and the chaos he creates by claiming that Yang Luchan will bring disaster to them as Chen-style kung fu is not allowed to be taught to outsiders. The film also revealed the motives for Fang Zi Jing (Eddie Peng)'s attacks on Chen village. It is the week for sequels in Singapore with "Taken 2" reporting in third place.

New movies that opened over the week in Malaysia are "Tai Chi Hero", "Frankenweenie", "Apa Celop Toqq", "Natural Born Lovers" and "Rush".
