"Breaking Dawn" breaks box office

21 Nov – Love it or loathe it, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2" saw many moviegoers and fans crowding the cinemas in the U.S. to catch the fifth and final instalment of the series over the weekend (15 – 18 November). As a result, the film grossed an outstanding $141.1 million, which ranks it eighth in the all-time and fourth in 2012 box office charts, behind "The Avengers", "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Hunger Games". The film is also slightly ahead of its predecessor, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1". In second place is Sam Mendes' critically acclaimed "Skyfall", followed by Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln". The latter is a historical drama film starring Daniel Day-Lewis as United States President Abraham Lincoln and Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln, and chronicles the final four months of Lincoln's life.

Last weekend in Malaysia, fans were eagerly anticipating the release of Tamil action thriller film "Thuppakki" in conjunction with Deepavali celebrations. Popular director A. R. Murugadoss directs, with popular stars Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal in the lead roles as Jagdish, a captain in the Indian Army and Nisha, a girl that his family chooses for him, respectively. The two eventually fall in love, but Jagdish is soon embroiled in a terrorist gang's plan and has to find a way to save himself and his friends. In second place is also "Skyfall", followed by the Hong Kong action thriller film "Cold War".

In Singapore, another type of action film took the lead, which is also the previous weekend's champion, "Ah Boys To Men: Part 1". Veteran director and actor Jack Neo directs the film, which focuses on the theme of the definitive path for all young men in Singapore's National Service (NS). Consequently, "Skyfall" retained its second place, while "Cold War" rounded up the top three.

New movies that opened over the week in Malaysia are "Son Of Sardar", "War Of The Worlds Goliath", "Pitch Perfect", "Red Lights" and "Jab Tak Hai Jaan".

New movies that opened over the week in Singapore are "Mystery (2D)", "Black Gold", "Chasing Mavericks (2D)" and "Lawless (2D)".
