"Ice Age 4" freezes box office

18 Jul – Despite drifting into the top spot at the U.S. box office (no, the pun never gets old), "Ice Age 4: Continental Drift" was greeted with a chilling reception for its opening weekend with grossing of only US$46.6 million from the weekend gone by (12 July to 15 July). According to Box Office Mojo, this was a considerably poor outing for the furry bunch compared to their other animated friends of 2012 such as Illumination Entertainment's "The Lorax" which opened at US$70.2 million, DreamWorks Animation's "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" at US$60.3 million and most recently, Pixar's "Brave" at US$66.3 million. However, it should be noted that "Ice Age 4: Continental Drift" managed to reclaim first place in the box office despite the addition of "The Amazing Spider-Man" last week, which should be a sigh of relief for the folks at Blue Sky Studios', and their possible motivation for making a fifth instalment. With that said, "The Amazing Spider-Man" fell to second place, followed by Seth MacFarlane's "Ted".

On the other hand, in Malaysia, "The Amazing Spider-Man" continued to top the box office charts as "Ice Age 4: Continental Drift" ascended to second place, replacing Ahmad Idham's "8 Jam". New entrant, Chakri Toleti's "Billa II", starring Ajith Kumar as the titular character, rounded up the top three. The prequel to the 2007 original serves as an introduction to Billa's background, where we see him transforming from an ordinary man to the notorious underworld don and also as an introduction for newcomers Parvathy Omanakuttan, Bruna Abdullah, Vidyut Jamwal, and Sudhanshu Pandey.

In Singapore, "Ice Age 4: Continental Drift" came out to as it did in the U.S. box office. As a result, last week's first placer "The Amazing Spider-Man" dipped to second while American president "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" is still doing fine work at third place.

New movies that opened in Malaysia are "Naked Soldier", "Momok Jangan Cari Pasal", "Silent House" and "Cocktail".

For Singapore, new movies that opened that week were "Chernobyl Diaries", "Bernie", "Motorway", "Billa II" and "Cocktail".
