6 Mar – With its vibrant colours and a strong background, "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" managed to exceed expectations and topped the weekend U.S. box office (1 to 4 Mar), as well as marking its mark as one of the best opening weekends ever for an animated movie. However, in spite of its US $70.2 million debut, the strong environmentalist message in "The Lorax" have been criticised as Hollywood propaganda for children, as it tells the story of a boy who, in his attempts to woo the girl he likes, end up on a mission to save the Truffula Forest, which is home to various wildlife and the Lorax himself. "Project X" comes second last weekend, a new addition for the rising found footage fad directed by debutant Nima Nourizadeh, about three friends who plan to gain popularity by throwing a party, a plan which quickly escalates out of their control while last weekend's champion "Act Of Valor" has dropped to third for the weekend gone by.
In Malaysia, it remains to be seen if "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" will take top spot in the box office as it will only see release this 8 March, leaving the local movie "Adnan Sempit 2", to keep its first place spot. Meanwhile, McG's "This Means War" starring Chris Pine and Tom Hardy eased up into second place, while the Nicholas Cage sequel "Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance" plummeted to third.
In Singapore, "Act Of Valor" takes no prisoners (or seconds) in its opening week, nabbing first place while "This Means War" dipped to second. "Project X" may not be showing in cinemas yet, but audiences satisfied their needs by turning to "The Devil Inside", a found footage horror about a woman who becomes involved in the world of exorcisms in her quest to determine what happened to her mother, who reportedly murdered three people as a result of being possessed by a demon.
In Malaysia, other new releases over the weekend were "Cinta Kura-Kura", "The Woman in Black", "Dance Dance Dragon", "The Devil Inside", "Aravaan", "London Paris New York", "Letters To God", "I Wish" and sneak previews for "The Lorax".
On the other hand, other releases in Singapore were, "In the Land of Blood and Honey", "Act Of Valor", "The Devil Inside", "The Lady", "Man On A Ledge", "5 Days Of War", "Aravaan" and sneak previews for "The Lorax".
