29 Mar – Following a discussion by Malaysia's Kementerian Dalam Negeri and Lembaga Penapis Filem (LPF), otherwise known as the Film Censorship Board, with all local cinema exhibitors and distributors, new classifications have been set for films shown on their screens.
U or 'Umum' is now blue, which meant that the film can be watched by all ages and consists of positive depictions of values. P13 or 'Penjaga 13' is yellow, which signifies that caution should be taken when watching the film as it is not suitable for individuals below 13 and any viewers of that age must be guided by a parent or guardian. 18 is red, which meant that the film is only suitable for viewers aged 18 and above as it contains images of violence, horror and sex, as well as religious, political and social elements. The additions of colour codes for film classification are meant to help viewers better identify the classifications such as red for 18 bring to mind a warning. Other changes include changing PG13 to P13 as PG meant 'Parental Guidance', which is in English, despite the U classification, which meant 'Umum' in Malay or 'General' in English. Thus, PG13 is then replaced with P13 to streamline the classifications. The new classifications will be effective from 1 April onwards.
