"Catching Fire" ignites box office

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" rules the box office this time.

26 Nov – In an outstanding result this week, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" went straight to the top of weekend movie box office (22-24 November), ruling over acclaimed new films like "Captain Phillips", and finally beating out "Thor: The Dark World" from their top spot last week.

The "Hunger Games" sequel also made history by setting a U.S. and Canadian record for November ticket sales and hauling in a huge $307.7 million (RM988.8 million) around the world.

"Iraandam Ulagam" takes the second spot in Malaysia.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" tells the continuation of the 'star crossed lovers' Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark who become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem.

"Catching Fire" beat out "Thor: The Dark World", "The Best Man Holiday" and "Delivery Man" in the U.S., and it beat "Captain Phillips" and "Thor: The Dark World" in Singapore.

In Malaysia however, Tamil film "Iraandam Ulagam" fell in second place as "Catching Fire" controlled the weekend box office this week. The film is an Indian planetary romance about two stories which unfold in two different planets and it did pretty well considering the only thing in the film's way of topping the box office was a Hollywood blockbuster.

Other new releases in Malaysia last week are "Singh Sahab The Great", "Gori Tere Pyaar Mein", "Kisah Paling Gengster", "Kick Ass Girls", "Battle Of The Year", "A Secret Between Us", "Hantu Tok Mudim" and "That Girl In Pinafore".

Other new releases in Singapore last week are "Singh Sahab The Great", "Gori Tere Pyaar Mein", "Commitment", "Closed Circuit", "-197°C Murder" and " Parkland".
