30 Jan – With five Academy Awards nominations and a Golden Globe award for Best Screenplay, "Django Unchained" is one of the most anticipated movies for Malaysian cinemagoers and fans of Westerns, and the film will be shown in all its uncensored glory in local cinemas soon. "Yes, we are releasing "Django Unchained" in 18. No cuts for the movie at all," said a representative of Sony Pictures Releasing International, the distributor for the Quentin Tarantino's film in Malaysia. The film was released last Christmas day in the US earlier. It attracted public attention for its emphasis on violence, slavery and racism, a boycott from director Spike Lee, who claimed the story as disrespectful to his ancestors and now eBay has officially banned the sales of the movie's action figures due to their restriction policy on selling racially or offensive works of art.
"Django Unchained" stars Jamie Foxx as the titular protagonist Django, Christoph Waltz as the German bounty hunter who helps him, Leonardo DiCaprio as the villain Calvin Candie, Samuel L. Jackson as Candie's second-in-command and Kerry Washington as Django's slave wife. However, Tarantino revealed that Will Smith was actually his first choice to take up the lead role in his epic western film, according to NME. "We spent quite a few hours together over a weekend when he was in New York doing "Men In Black III". We went over the script and talked it out." He added: "He didn't walk away from it because he was scared of the material. It just wasn't 100 per cent right, and we didn't have time to try to make it that way." "Django Unchained" will be released in Malaysia on 14 March.
