Director J.J. Abrams and the cast of "Star Trek" made a dying fan's wish come true.

6 Jan – Director J.J. Abrams, known for his secrecy when it comes to movie plots, recently broke his own rules by granting a dying fan a secret preview of the unfinished "Star Trek Into Darkness".

41-year-old movie buff named Daniel had been diagnosed with leukaemia when he was 38 and now has only a few weeks to live.

His family had managed to get him out of the hospital in time for a screening of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" since a 9-minute preview of "Star Trek Into Darkness" was supposed to be screened but the particular theatre happened to not be showing the trailer.

Friends and family ended up seeking help on Internet message board Reddit in hopes of making his wish come true.

Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and Lieutenant Uhura (Zoe Saldana) faces a formidable foe in "Star Trek Into Darkness".

Daniel's wife later posted on the message board on 31 December that the director fulfilled his wish.

"We are of course sworn to secrecy, BUT we are officially allowed to say we saw it and we enjoyed it IMMENSELY as a film and as a gesture," his wife writes. "It was truly amazing that a filmmaker as secretive as J.J. Abrams was kind enough to show this to us."

"Star Trek Into Darkness" will follow the crew of the Enterprise as they return to Earth, only to find out their home is been threatened by a powerful enemy that may prove impossible to stop.

The movie will be released in Malaysia and Singapore on 16 May this year.
