29 Aug – "Elysium" clenches the top spot in the box office last weekend (22-25 Aug). Neill Blomkamp's new science fiction film, which just hit local cinemas, has managed to win over the audience with its action/fantasy feel and out of this world concept. The film has beaten fellow newcomer "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" along with "The Conjuring", "Unbeatable", last weekend's champion "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters" and local film "Paku Pontianak". The films fall into the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth place respectively. In Singapore however, "Elysium" is no longer a fresh face which has allowed newcomer "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" to take top spot in the weekend box office. "Elysium" moves down to second place while the other new releases, "The Internship" and "Kick-Ass 2" take third and fourth place respectively. "The Conjuring" drops to fifth place after being in second place for two weeks.
In the United States, "The Butler" retains its top position in the box office. In second place is "We're the Millers" which has also not budged from its position since last week. "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" and "The World's End" place third and fourth place respectively on its opening week, knocking down "Planes" to fifth. Other new films that opened over the weekend in Malaysia are, "The Purge", "The Frozen Ground", "Desingu Raja" and "Paku Pontianak". Other new films that opened over the weekend in Singapore are, "The After-Dinner Mysteries", "Pawn Shop" and "Only God Forgives".
