Rooney Mara joins "Carol"

Rooney Mara will star alongside Cate Blanchett.

4 Sept – Oscar nominated actress Rooney Mara is set to co-star opposite Cate Blanchett in Todd Haynes' "Carol".

Her role, originally given to fellow young actress Mia Wasikowska, involves playing a 20-something clerk working in a department store and dreaming of a better life and falls for an older, married woman, played by Cate Blanchett.

The suspense drama is adapted from the novella by Patricia Highsmith, who also wrote "The Talented Mr. Ripley".

Cate Blanchett is also set to star in "Carol".

"We're over the moon to have Rooney on board," said director Todd Haynes. "I've been a tremendous admirer of her work from the beginning, so the thought of bringing her together with Cate onscreen is thrilling to say the least."

Mara has a knack of choosing interesting projects with fascinating directors like David Fincher ("The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", "The Social Network"), Steven Soderbergh ("Side Effects"). Besides "Carol" as a future project of hers, Mara will next be seen in Spike Jonze's "Her" with Joaquin Phoenix and Stephen Daldry's "Trash".

Blanchett's future projects include both of the sequels to "The Hobbit", and a new adaptation of "Cinderella". The film plans to shoot next year.
