19 Jun – Government Health Officials are investigating Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan and his wife Gauri when reports detailing that the couple knew the sex of the baby they are having via a surrogate mother beforehand surfaced, as prenatal sex tests are illegal in India. The reason behind the ban was due to the culture's preference for boys as they tend to be the breadwinners and household leaders. It resulted in India's Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques Act being created to stop the practice of female foetuses being aborted. News that Khan will father a third son through surrogacy came as a shock to the film community. Khan already has two teenage children, a son named Aryan and daughter named Suhana. Khan was not at home when the authorities tried to question him about the reports, and has not commented on the matter since.
The allegations were made by an unnamed Indian medical NGO and Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA). Dr Jignesh Thakkar, who is part of IRIA said, "We want to know the truth, and if it is true how the gender came out and who told it. If news reports are true, then it is clear that celebrities can get away with breaking the law." The 47-year-old actor who is also known as King Khan topped the first Forbes India Celebrity 100 list earlier this year with estimated annual earnings of USD 37.7 million. Khan will next appear in "Chennai Express", an Indian action comedy film directed by Rohit Shetty.
