Spader is "Avengers" villain

James Spader to play Ultron.

30 Aug – Marvel has just announced that "Boston Legal" star James Spader will play the lead villain Ultron in Joss Whedon's "The Avengers: Age of Ultron". Spader will play the powerful robot villain in the film, to be written and directed by Joss Whedon, who made a cameo "Avengers" in 2012 at the end of the film.

Ultron, based on the comics, was created by Dr. Henry Pym who is also Ant-Man (which will also be a Marvel movie coming soon!). Pym was experimenting with sentient robots, when he succeeded a bit more than he'd hoped.

While Ultron has quite a bit of backstory already, "Avengers 2" director Joss Whedon says that he won't be going down that road. He's decided to rewrite Ultron's origins so that the audiences can be surprised.

"James Spader will face off against Earth's Mightiest Heroes as the villain in Marvel's "Avengers: Age of Ultron," the sequel to 2012's record-breaking "Marvel's The Avengers". The Emmy Award-winning actor will play Ultron in the Avengers' much anticipated return to the big screen from writer/director Joss Whedon," said the official statement.

Besides his reign in popular television show "Boston Legal", Spader was most recently seen in the final season of "The Office", and director Steven Spielberg's Oscar award winning film, "Lincoln". He will also star in the film "The Homesman", directed by his "Lincoln" costar Tommy Lee Jones.

"The Avengers: Age of Ultron" is planned to be released in mid-2015.
