31 Jul – Alex Kurtzman was reported to have been already producing the film with Chris Morgan but now he's getting involved in yet another way, the screenwriter is going to direct the new version of "The Mummy" for Universal. Kurtzman was set to direct "Venom", Sony's "Spider-Man" spinoff, but this might not happen now that "The Mummy" is slotted for release next year, on 22 April 2016 to be precise. If Kurtzman decides to still direct for Sony, "Venom" might only come out in 2019.
Kurtzman, famous for writing the screen plays for the "Transformers" and "Star Trek" franchises, is no stranger to directing, having previously directed "People Like Us". However, this will be quite a leap in budget as he goes from directing a film with a modest budget to one with a Universal budget. Morgan and Kurtzman will be bringing back Universal's classical monsters in a shared universe monster movie reboot which will include the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, Dracula and of course, The Mummy. "The Mummy" is the first of the rebooted monster movies to be released and it will set the tone and setting for the rest to come.
